About 20 years ago, Doug and I spent a couple of years playing together in a rehearsal band (we were all just learning about jazz then), after which we only saw each other occasionally. That is, until Doug came to me with his new CD project. It was great to spend some time together after all these years and I really enjoyed recording his quartet. What I enjoyed most was the uniqueness of his compositions. Doug had recently travelled in Europe and his music is a chronicle of this journey. For me the most memorable tunes are those that portray tragic and melancholy stories he learned from the locals. The album was recorded in two days at the end of January, 2011, with a few overdubs being recorded in the following months.
“I was extremely pleased with my entire experience at Morning Anthem Studio – as were all my bandmates. Norm knows his equipment and his software inside and out. But in addition to his many technical skills, Norm became as much a part of the project as the band, and I found his artistic suggestions to be both cogent and useful.” – Doug Martin
